"No matter how
well a furniture panel blocks sound, it cannot block the
sound that goes over the top of it. A ceiling can only
absorb sound that actually reaches it. Offices with
absorptive panels and absorptive ceilings, but no
sound masking can actually have lower speech privacy levels
than offices without those upgrades. Here's why:
Sound
absorbers work indiscriminately, absorbing the ambient
background sound level as well as some of the sounds that
need to be absorbed. Anyone who has worked in an
environment that is so "quiet" that conversations
can be heard for a great distance understands
that quiet and private are not the same."
